How to get to Central Otago New Zealand

Central Otago is located in the southern part of New Zealand’s South Island. While it is a remote and rugged region, there are several options for getting there, including:

  1. By Air: The closest airport to Central Otago is Queenstown Airport. There are several domestic and international flights that operate into Queenstown from cities such as Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch. Once you arrive at Queenstown airport, you can rent a car, take a shuttle service, or catch a bus to Central Otago.
  2. By Car: Central Otago is easily accessible by car from major cities such as Dunedin, Christchurch, and Queenstown. State Highway 8 is the main road that connects the region to other parts of the South Island. It is recommended to have a car when exploring the region, as public transportation options can be limited.
  3. By Bus: Intercity buses operate between major cities in New Zealand and Central Otago. There are also several local bus services that operate within the region. This is a good option for those who do not want to rent a car or prefer not to drive.
  4. By Train: The Taieri Gorge Railway operates scenic train rides between Dunedin and Central Otago. This is a great option for those who want to take in the stunning scenery of the region while traveling.

Once you arrive in Central Otago, there are several transportation options available to explore the region, including car rentals, bike rentals, and shuttle services. It is recommended to plan your transportation in advance, especially during peak travel seasons, to ensure availability and avoid disappointment.
